Reaching People Through Church

It is clear from recent reports on new infections that the Latino/a community is not being reached with the information it needs to prevent further infections among men who have sex with men, especially among Latino's who do not speak English.. As a gay Latino man, I am very concerned about this problem. Last year I was involved with a HIV group of Latino's called Corazones Unidos in Oakland who made a presentation at a local Latino Catholic Church at the Spanish speaking Masses. People at the Masses had a terrified look on their faces as we told our stories and few people would greet us or make contact after each of the Masses. If we are to make any progress in the Latino community we must be able to reach these fearful people with information about HIV/AIDS prevention. I would try to gather together a team of Latino's to make a speaking tour of the various Churches in the Oakland area where there are monolingual congregations. We would make presentations that would bring the real faces of HIV to these people (especially undocumented Latinos).
