Massachusetts Department of Public Health HIV/AIDS Bureau

In 1983, Governor Dukakis convened the Massachusetts Task Force on AIDS, chaired by then DPH Commissioner Bailus Walker. Composed of leading clinicians, researchers, epidemiologists and community advocates, the Task Force met monthly to develop, guide and plan for the Commonwealth's multi-faceted response to the epidemic. The AIDS crisis created a new era in public health, compelling MDPH to strengthen its partnerships with providers, consumers and advocates. In 1985, the HIV/AIDS Bureau was established.

Our programs and our dedicated employees strive to promote full access to services for persons most at risk for HIV infection, and those living with HIV/AIDS. In order to accomplish this mission, the Bureau operates three programmatic units, two support units, and supports numerous collaborative partnerships.
